A chimney carries smoke and combustion gases from a fireplace or wood-burning stove safely out of the house. Damage to the flue or the brickwork can let those gases, or even heat, reach places they should never go.

- Cracked or damaged flue liners. A broken flue liner can let fumes leak into the home. We repair or replace liners so the flue vents as it should.
- Crumbling mortar joints. Eroded joints let water into the stack. We repoint with a suitable mortar to restore strength and keep the weather out.
- Cracked or spalled crowns. The crown is the concrete cap on top of the brickwork. Once it cracks, water runs straight down into the chimney, so we repair or rebuild it.
- Missing or broken chimney caps. A cap keeps out rain, debris and animals. We fit new caps and replace damaged ones.
- Spalling brick. Age, frost and heat can make brick faces chip and flake. We cut out spalled units and set in matching replacements.
- Failed flashing. Where the stack meets the roof, step and counter flashing seal the joint. We renew tired flashing so the chimney stops feeding a roof leak.
Repointing, Rebuilding and Flashing
Many chimneys only need their joints renewed. We rake out the loose mortar, clean the joints and pack them with a mix that suits the age of the brick. The finished joints are tooled so water runs off the face instead of sitting in it.
Where the brickwork has loosened, leans or has lost too many faces, patching is false economy. We take the stack down to sound masonry, often at or near the roofline, and rebuild it course by course, finishing with a new crown and cap.
Flashing sits on the line between masonry and roofing. We cut it into the mortar joints, lap it over the roof covering and seal it, so the weakest point on many roofs becomes watertight again.
Why Early Chimney Repairs Matter
Freeze-thaw winters are hard on chimneys. Water that enters a cracked crown or an open joint freezes, expands and forces the masonry apart a little further each season, until bricks loosen or fall.
Fixing a crown, cap or run of joints early keeps the rest of the stack sound. It also protects the ceilings, walls and roof timbers below from slow water damage that is often found late.
