Most of our walling is free-standing or attached to the house. Where a wall needs to hold back ground, we treat it as a retaining wall and design the drainage and build-up for that extra load.
New Walls
A new wall starts below ground. We set out the line, prepare a solid footing and build up in the chosen material, whether clay brick, natural stone or concrete block. Bonds, copings and caps are chosen to suit the look of the property.
Copings matter more than they seem. A well-detailed top throws water clear of the wall faces, which keeps the brickwork beneath drier and slows frost damage through the winter.
Repairing Existing Walls
Older walls suffer from failed joints, frost-damaged brick and sections that lean or bulge. Tree roots, poor footings and water running down the face are frequent causes, so we look for the reason before planning the fix.
Where the damage is local, we cut out and replace cracked units, match the existing brickwork bond as closely as possible and renew loose copings. Open joints across a larger area are best handled by our repointing team.
When a section has moved too far to save, we take it down to sound masonry and rebuild it. Reclaimed or carefully matched brick helps the new work blend into the old so the wall still reads as one.
Weather and Frost Protection
Free-standing walls are exposed on both faces and along the top, so they take more weather than most house walls. Sound joints, a good coping and a damp course near the base all help keep water out of the core.
Where a wall runs beside a slope or a flower bed, soil piled against it holds moisture in the brick. We keep the ground clear of the face where possible, or detail the wall to cope with the damp.
Matching Materials and Mortar
We try to match brick size, colour and texture, and the mortar colour and joint profile, so repairs do not jump out. Mortar strength is chosen to suit the brick, as an over-hard mix can crack softer brick faces.
