Types of Shingle
There are four main families of shingle to choose from, each with its own look and budget:
- Three-tab: a flat, single-layer shingle giving a neat, even pattern at an economical price
- Architectural or dimensional: a thicker laminated shingle with shadow lines and depth, stronger wind resistance and longer service life than three-tab
- Designer or premium: heavy, sculpted shingles made to resemble slate or cedar shake
- Impact-resistant: reinforced shingles rated to stand up to hail and wind-blown debris

How a Shingle Roof Is Built
Whichever shingle you pick, the process underneath is the same:
- Tear-off of the existing covering and removal of debris
- Inspection of the roof deck, replacing any boards that are damaged
- Self-adhered ice-and-water membrane along the eaves and through the valleys
- Synthetic underlayment over the rest of the deck
- New drip edge and flashings
- Installation of the shingles to the manufacturer’s nailing pattern
- Balanced ventilation at the ridge and soffits
The membranes and ventilation are installed to meet building code requirements, and they do much of the quiet work of keeping the roof dry over its life.
Why Ventilation Matters
Warm, moist air rising from the house needs a way out. Without balanced airflow between the soffits and the ridge, that moisture condenses in the roof space, and in winter the extra warmth encourages ice to build up along the eaves.
Getting the ventilation right protects the shingles from overheating in summer and reduces the risk of ice damming in winter, so it is a standard part of every shingle roof we install.
